Assamese or Asamiya is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language used mainly in the state of Assam in North-East India. It is the official language of Assam. It is also spoken in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and other northeast Indian states. Assamese is the easternmost of Indo-European languages; it is spoken by over 13 million native speakers. Assamese language is derived out of the ancient Indian language Sanskrit and uses script similar to the Bengali script, with few additions in number of letters.
The Araucanian languages are a small language family of central Chile with its alternate names as Mapudungun; Araucano; Maputongo; Mapuche; Araucanian; “Auca”. and adjacent areas of Argentina. The number of speakers is about 200,000 in Chile and the population totals all countries is about 300,039. The Ethnic population is about 604,349 (2002). The number of speakers differs in terms of definition and research methods.
Aramaic belongs to the Semitic family of languages. It was the language of Israel in the second Temple Period. It has been used in the administration of empires and also as a language of divine worship. It is said that it was the language that Jesus Christ probably used the most. Large sections of the biblical books Daniel and Ezra has been written in Aramaic language. Aramaic is now considered to be endangered language.
Arabic is a name applied to the descendants of the Classical Arabic language of the 6th century AD. This includes both the literary language and varieties of Arabic spoken in a wide arc of territory stretching across the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic is the 4th most spoken language with around 280 million native speakers in the world. Arabic languages are Central Semitic languages, most closely related to Hebrew, Aramaic, Ugaritic and Phoenician.
Amharic is the national language of Ethiopia. It is the official language of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. It is the second-most spoken Semitic language in the world. The majority of the 25 million (approx.) speakers of Amharic are present in Ethiopia. It is spoken in a number of other countries as well, particularly, Eritrea, Canada, the USA and Sweden. Amharic has been the official language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in medieval and modern times. Amharic is been spoken by some 2.7 million emigrants outside Ethiopia.
It is a language spoken by about 300 people in Alaska and Siberian Commander Islands and is a part of the Eskimo-Aleut language family. Aleut is divided into many dialects. Most of speakers live on the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands of Alaska. Aleut was written with a version of the Cyrillic alphabet by a Russian Orthodox priest, Ioann Veniaminov (1797-1879). Veniaminov started working with the Aleut in 1824, translated parts of the bible and other religious works into Aleut, and in 1846 he published a grammar of Eastern Aleut.
Albanian belongs to Indo-European language group branch and is spoken by about 7.6 million people. The language is spoken in Albania and Kosovo, and also in few parts of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Greece and Italy. The speakers of Albanian can also be found in other areas originating from the Balkans, that also includes Scandinavia, Switzerland, Germany, United Kingdom, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Singapore, Brazil, Canada, and the United States(modern diaspora).
Akkadian is a Semitic language which belongs to the part of the greater Afro-Asiatic language family and is spoken in ancient Mesopotamia, mainly by the Assyrians and Babylonians. It used the writing system derived eventually from ancient Sumerian, an unrelated, non-Semitic language. The name of the language is derived from the city of Akkad, a major hub of Mesopotamian civilization. Akkadian was the major language of ancient Mesopotamia. It was spoken by the Assyrians in the north and the Babylonians in the south and survived as a written language.
The Akan languages are part of Kwa group and are the part of the Niger-Congo languages . There are about 7 million Akan speakers in eastern Ivory Coast, south-central Ghana, and central Togo. The Akans are the biggest ethnic group and have a population of about 20 million people. There are numerous dialects of Akan, including Twi, Fante, Bono, Wasa, Nzema, Baule and Anyi, with a high level of mutual clearness between them.
Afrikaans is a language from Dutch and falls under the Low Franconian West Germanic languages which is spoken mainly in South Africa and Namibia. Afrikaans is spoken in Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Germany, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK, the USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe as well. About 10 million people speak Afrikaans as their first language, and other numerous million have a basic understanding of the language. Previously, it is a daughter language of Dutch, and was formerly referred to as “Cape Dutch”.
